Lakenheath & Mildenhall

20/05/24

It is not often I am over in Suffolk, but when I am I make sure to get at least one trip to the twin bases in with WM

We set off early, to ensure we could capture images of XG210, which we had been trying to find for a long time. By 0600, we had located the airframe and had documented it for the records. It was sad to see her in such a sorry state, but glad it was on display to rather than tucked away in a locked barn.

We arrived at the HATRACK in good time, ready for first lift on 06 at about 0730. The Grim Reapers kept it low, as did the clouds, so the fluff was obscured.

After a few more 35s came the Mudhens. This time the cloud was higher but still very overcast.

By 1100, the clouds had completely lifted revealing a blue sky for the Bolars to show us how it's done.

Keeping an eye on Fighter Control, we saw that a mystery Herc was due into the Hall, so we kept an eye on it as it slowly made its way over Spain and France. As the smoky H model came into view, we saw it bore no markings of the USAF (of which it was tracking as), instead it was marked as Botswana Defence Force. I understand that this aircraft once belonged to the USAF, and was sold to Afghanistan.

We departed the Hall, to return to the Hatrack for the afternoon lifts. This yielded some of my favourite USAF shots to date. I also tried some video work for the website but this was tricker than anticipated handheld.

Coincidentally, today was the day Bomber Task Force 24 arrived in the UK from Minot, so we caught the supporting tankers RTB at Mildenhall, as well as "Silver Dollar" basking in golden hour.
