URBEX - RAF Chedworth

06/04/24

Around this time last year, I paid my first visit to the now completely abandoned site of RAF Chedworth. Having a free Saturday afternoon, I decided to visit a second time.

Inactive since the 80s, RAF Chedworth was used initially in 1942 as a satellite station to RAF Aston Down, followed by a brief period of flying Spitfires and Magisters. Other aircraft that have flown from this site include Mosquitoes, Beaufighters, Masters, Grasshoppers, L-5 Sentinels and Airspeed Oxfords.

Using the EDOB database of surviving WW2 buildings, I was able to locate a few buildings and underground shelters off the side of a footpath.

The runways themselves are largely intact, albeit caked in grass, moss and manure piles. There is a public footpath heading straight down 1 of the 3 runways of the site.

Above is what I can ony assume to be a sink or water heater from the site, in front of an active beehive which was left well alone! The writing on this object read "DENOLA REGISTERED" - a few minutes of research didn't reveal anything so would appreciate any more information of this

The top side of one of the underground shelters, not massively underground, but a decent enough covering of earth to provide a bit of protection

After I got home, I checked out EDOB again and it seemed I had missed out visiting the Battle HQ towards the South of the site. It looked to be by far the most interesting structure that still remains, but it seems from images that it is flooded internally. https://www.subbrit.org.uk/sites/chedworth-airfield-battle-hq/ for anyone looking for some more information about this structure.

Wikipedia also states that there is an intact Blister Hangar, and I did find an image of this from 2007, but I didn't manage to find it on this occasion.
